- As soon as you get a new pet, check for an existing chip. If there is no chip, make an appointment to have one placed.
- Once the microchip is in place, register it to your name! There are several options for registering the microchip - some require a payment at registry, but there is a free service at this website: www.FreePetChipRegistry.com
- Keep your contact information updated with the microchip registry and your veterinarian
- Ask your veterinarian to scan your pet's microchip once a year to make sure it is still working and hasn't moved in your pet's body.
- Don't forget about other forms of ID, like a breakaway collar with an ID tag. The more precautions you take, the better!
Common Misconceptions About Microchips
- "My pet wears a collar and ID tag, so a microchip is not necessary."*Many cats don't tolerate a collar, or the collar can break away if it is caught on something and become separated from the cat. Only a microchip can provide permanent ID that does not fall off or get removed.
- "A microchip can track my pet's movements"*Microchips are not GPS tracking devices. It cannot tell you where to find your pet. However, if your cat is found and brought in to a veterinary clinic or shelter, the microchip scanner will reveal the unique ID number, and the staff will be able to look up your contact information that is entered in the registry.
- "The shelter microchipped my pet, so we are protected."*Many people adopt pets that are already microchipped, but registering that chip into your name is your responsibility. The shelter does not register the pet for you upon adoption.
- "Any scanner will read my pet's microchip"*Unfortunately, some older model scanners cannot read the newer chips. This is why it is important to have your veterinarian check your pet's microchip at least once a year to make sure it is still readable by the current scanners.
